Project Details

Picture
The Summer Art Camp will take place over a week’s time and will allow about 100 children ages 4-6 yrs old and 7-14 yrs old the opportunity to learn about dance, music, photography, quilting, local history, literature, theater, arts & crafts. They will participate in a live performance in front of a projected audience of more than 300 people & interact with artists and to create works of art and create costumes and props that will be used during the performance. This project will be a collaborative effort between The Fitzgerald-Ben Hill County Arts Council, The Grand Theater, The City of Fitzgerald, Community in Schools, local and regional artists, local and regional individuals, Fitzgerald - Ben Hill County Public Library and the Blue & Gray Museum. The Fitzgerald-Ben Hill County Arts Council is proud to have established strong collaborative relationships with various agencies and private citizens to assist in bringing the Arts to the citizens of Ben Hill County.

Experience

Picture
The Summer Art Camp, Performance & Exhibit will give the children a chance to experience many different art mediums from Visual Art, Literary Art, to Music and Performing Art. The Exhibit and Performance will allow the whole community to participate in this wonderful and enlightening experience. This summer art camp will give children the opportunity to interact with 10 or more local and regional artists, musicians, and directors and it will provide the children with the supplies and instruction needed to make something of their own creation. We have decided to offer a wide range of art mediums in which to expose the children to so that they might see the wide range of opportunities in art.

Involvement

The headquarters everyday will be the Grand Theater. The children will arrive at 9am and we will begin our day with a group music session before we break into separate groups based on characters. Each day we will have different projects that we will be working on in addition to going to the library for lessons in literature, illustrations, poetry and film. We will have five days of interactive hands on experience working in different art mediums. Throughout the week the children will be divided into smaller groups and will have the opportunity to see demonstrations and work hands on with the following:  Making Props and Costumes for the performance, Painting, Yoga, Collage, Quilt making, Photography, Poetry, Creative writing, stories of local history and Dance. The children will be involved with every aspect of the production from making props and costumes to operating the lights to performing on stage to working behind the scenes in the backstage crew. We did this the past two years and the children and the parents loved the holistic experience. A behind the scenes tour of The Grand Theater will not only show what goes into putting on a live stage production but what the film showing capabilities are as well.

Display

We will have musicians come in and play for the children and teach them some fun songs to sing for the performance. We will have an assortment of fun and educational music related games. The children will have a chance to rotate through various classes over the week. The children will be taught arts and crafts in the Carnegie Center. The Carnegie Center is our gallery space and will have art on display for the enjoyment of our community. Our day will include a trip a city block away to the Fitzgerald–Ben Hill Library. Each day the library staff will have a different experience planned for the children that will entail instructional time on creative writing, play writing, literature appreciation, poetry, a puppet show, special guest literary character, book making and more. The Summer Art Camp will end each day at 3pm at which time parents or guardians will be responsible for the pick up of their children from the Grand Theatre. The performance will be on Saturday at 11am.
